Roland Emmerich has never made a good movie and he never will. He writes boring characters and throws them into staple story arcs and expects me to like it.
A. Lee Martinez wrote a blog that mentions something that I agree with : Reality Isn’t Always a Writer’s Friend - here he mentions that realism isn’t necessary for a good story. And with 10,000 BC I was prepared to leave behind any of my knowledge and just enjoy a action adventure flick, but it just sucked. The story was lame, the acting was tame and the action was bland.
By the time the tiger gets involved I was bored to the point of tears.
I had an argument way back in time with a friend who took film at college and university. We’d just come out of seeing The Day After Tomorrow, which had been a terrible film. I had gotten nicely drunk beforehand, as I had known the movie wouldn’t amount to anything, because Emmerich was behind it. The acquaintance and I argued, he thought it was good, I thought it was shit. He said I was a drunk and whatever I had to say was irrelevant because he was and always had been stone cold sober. Now I watch another Emmerich flick, stone cold sober, and I have the same problems with this one that I did with the other one.
Emmerich takes neat ideas and rapes them with bad characters. It’s as simple as that.
