So You Think You Know Where I’m From?

Reading Zoe Sharp’s First Drop, I’ve noticed something about the way Charlie Fox is always accepted by any of the American characters in the novel.  They all instantly know she is English.

This has never happened to me.

Being a English blokey living in the States, I’ve been accused of being lots of different nationalities. I don’t have any easily distinguishable accent, like a Geordie, Liverpudlian or any of those broad brogues. I just have an South-East England accent, not Londonish but something.

So, here are a few of the accusations:

Russian: A manly looking woman asked me if I was from Russia, after my attempts at ordering a sandwich from the deli she was working at. I’ve never been accused of that before and I was one step from accusing her of being Russian.

Scottish: This comes from the Americans that needed to watch Trainspotting with subtitles on, so intent on reading the movie that they didn’t actually hear what a Scottish, albeit one part of Scotlands plethora of dialects, person sounds like.

Australian: They do it innocently. They don’t understand how insulting it is to be called Australian in public!

Irish: No idea why they come up with this, to be sure.

Its just something that irks me about Zoe Sharp’s First Drop, its not a deal breaker, I’m still enjoying it. But the times it happens, it shears a tiny bit of believability from the tale… :D
